Goldbeck Rhomberg uses concrete produced with reduced emissions for the first time

For the construction of the logistics and IT centre for the logistics company Gebrüder Weiss in Wolfurt, the construction and services company Goldbeck Rhomberg is using Blue Concrete, a concrete produced with reduced emissions, for the first time. The production of Blue Concrete already produces around 35 per cent fewer emissions than the industry average.

The logistics and IT centre comprises an automated high-bay warehouse with 68,000 pallet spaces and a manual warehouse with adjoining office buildings for around 350 employees.

The project includes numerous sustainability measures, such as: DGNB Gold certification, photovoltaic systems, mobility concept to promote public transport and the use of bicycles by employees, intensively and extensively greened roof areas and electric charging stations for lorries and cars.

Blue Concrete production method

Cement is an essential component of concrete. Although it only makes up around 15 per cent of the concrete mix, cement production accounts for around 80 per cent of all emissions associated with concrete production. This is where the Blue Concrete developed by Goldbeck comes in. By adapting the material composition and optimising the production process, considerable progress has been made. Another key to reducing CO2 emissions lies in reducing the cement content. An improvement has been achieved here through innovative processes such as the energetic pre-treatment of the cement suspension using ultrasound. Thanks to these measures, the production of Blue Concrete already causes around 35 per cent fewer emissions than the industry average. The price is comparable to conventionally produced concrete elements. Customers benefit from an improved environmental balance without any economic disadvantage.

Systematised construction method

Goldbeck Rhomberg produces key construction elements for the buildings itself in its own factories and then assembles them precisely on the construction site thanks to the systematised construction method. In this way, the company guarantees cost and schedule reliability and saves valuable resources.

Combining economic efficiency and ecology

The project in Wolfurt is an example of the sustainable construction methods of the future. "With the use of Blue Concrete in our "OFFICE Architecture" product, which is used in the office buildings, we are demonstrating that economic efficiency and ecology can go hand in hand," explains Georg Vallaster, Managing Director of Goldbeck Rhomberg. "Thanks to our systematised construction method, we have always conserved resources". "The state-of-the-art logistics and IT site will be ideal for our employees and customers: On the one hand, our IT teams are moving closer together, and on the other hand, thanks to the immediate proximity to Wolfurt freight station, we can combine transport more efficiently, shift to rails and even shorten transport routes," explains Wolfram Senger-Weiss, CEO of Gebrüder Weiss. "For our customers, this means greater security of supply for materials and goods, which also has a positive effect on other businesses in Vorarlberg and the region."
